Debt Negotiation Advice

Can a collection agency re-date your account when you make phone contact, ie trying to negotiate with them?

I want to negotiate some of the debt to be removed completely from my CR, for a percentage, but I don't want it re-dated (of course). Should I even contact the companies that are within a year of falling off or should I just let old dogs lie?

  1. Contact them. If you don't, they don't "fall off" - they'll just get sold to another company and it'll start all over again....
  2. Don't be a deadbeat. if it's your debt you owe - so pay it.
  3. If you contact them, they can re-date the account. If you have the means to pay the debt you should do that. After all, it is your responsibility.
  4. Like the person above said, don't wait. There are no sleeping dogs here, just hungry dogs that want your money. If you owe the money, then you owe the money. Period. End. Someone will always be after you for it, it will just be a different someone who wants even more money to settle your account. Get this taken care of and get on with you life. If you want your credit score to look a little better, then ask the company you are negotiating with to mark your account as paid in full. Whatever you do with this company, get it in writing. These guys can be sneaky, and they will keep coming back for more money. Do not give them access to your bank account. Send them the money through cashier's check, money order or Western Union and keep your receipts and records of what you have paid. Good luck!
